HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
…the 1955 Chevrolet represented a milestone styling change for the make
(it
had a new chassis too)
.  The 1954
(by
comparison)
instantly looked too tall, too narrow and too outdated.  The new 1955’s smooth body-sides, flat hood,
and flat trunk were all much-needed updates to keep Chevy ahead of Ford – which
had its own dramatic styling departure from the industry in 1949.
The Chevrolet Delray
series was named after a Detroit neighborhood, and began in 1954 as trim option
to make the 210 series a bit snazzier.
In
fact, the stainless body trim on this Delray shown at right, is about the
straightest and nicest we have seen!
As the founding year
of the famed
Tri Five
Chevrolets
(1955, 1956, 1957)
this ’55 Delray
is a Blue-Chip classic that is poised for a solid future as one of the
quintessential American classics from the 1950s.
BACKGROUND ON THIS
CAR
…the
beautiful ’55 210/Delray that you see here was acquired by an avid classic
enthusiast in 1981.  For 40 years it was
continually modified and improved with more and more investment until it
reached the level of sophistication you see here with such features as the
LWA
Performance Engines
V8 under the hood with twin-
Edelbrocks
and
BDS
blower.  Impressive custom
interior work,
Dakota Digital Dash
, and high-quality Audio system
(Pioneer
Head-unit, Kicker Amp, trunk mounted CD changer)
round out the build.
Restoration
…though it was
restored to a high standard, the owner passed away eight years ago, and the car
has largely “sat” since that time.  It
had been started and driven a little for “exercise”, but not much else was
done.  Because the car has always seemed
to be a member of the family, it was very difficult for the owner’s wife to
make the decision to sell, but now that she is down-sizing, it is time.
See the Video on
YouTube
…Fluids were topped off, the tank was filled, and a new battery was
installed.  The car came to life and
after a brief warm-up, it idled and drove nicely.  In fact, we posted a
YouTube
video.  To see it, go to
YouTube

WHAT TO EXPECT
…it is a stunningly
beautiful car, but not without faults.  Seasoned
classic collectors know that NO car is perfect, and this is no exception.  The exceptionally smooth paint finish has
developed paint rash/bubbling – particularly on both rear fenders, but also
(though
to a far less degree)
“here and there” in other areas of the car as well.  The engine has a  high performance cam, and needs warming up for
a reliable idle.  With its 2-speed “clutchless”
(i.e. no clutch pedal)
transmission, it is easy to drive but geared for
quick starts off the line.  We do not recommend
any high speed highway driving because the engine will rev too high and risk
damage.  It was built to be quick – not to
go fast – and is most suitable for in-town and leisurely countryside
drives.  As is the case with many serious
performance cars…there is NO heater OR air-conditioner.  Though it drove well for the video and
photo-session, as a 65-year old car that has been largely dormant for eight
years; please realize that adjustments, maintenance
(changing all fluids is
recommended to the new owner, for example)
, and repairs
(see Operational
Details)
should be expected and considered as part of the reality of
classic car ownership.
We do not
recommend buying this car to anyone who is not prepared for these basic “facts
of life” of vintage/classic car ownership
.
OPERATIONAL DETAILS
& QUIRKS…
as shown in the
YouTube
video referenced above, the car warmed up
well and gave a nice test drive for the photoshoot.  All external lights work
.
The horn is not
operational.  There is NO heater or Air
Conditioner…this is a performance oriented classic.  Audio system sounded very good with a CD…there
is no antenna, so no radio stations
(AM or FM)
were received. There is a
remote control for audio functions, but it did not work
(likely just needs a
new battery)
.  Though there IS a
digital clock on the far right side of the dash, it is inoperative
(the blue
lens over the clock is a “press fit” as shown)
. There are no lighters.  The speedometer cable is disconnected and
hangs down a bit under the car
(see image at right)
.  Wipers are inoperative.  The power seats
(and their adjustments)
do not have a full range of
travel, making rear seat access difficult unless you are
very
young or
very
acrobatic!  The RPM, Oil and Temp gauges worked
during the test drive, the Speedometer and Fuel gauges did not.  Parking Brake was not tested for fear
(after sitting 8 years)
that it might “stick”.
We have attempted to make this
Operational Report as complete as possible, but please understand that
oversights are possible and that changes in condition can occur in time and
with use.
IMPORTANT IMAGE NOTES…
t
here are over 175 images,
because we want to show you EVERY aspect of this iconic 1955 Chevrolet Delray.
THE FIRST 12 PICTURES
will give you a general overview.
But if you are seriously interested in buying, it is important that you look at
ALL 175+ images because we want you to see
EVERYTHING
. Pictures are
arranged in sections detailing the Exterior, Interior, Engine Compartment, Areas
with Paint rash/bubbling, and Undercarriage.
Imperfections – when found – are shown throughout.
EXCELLENT INVESTMENT…
the 1955 Chevrolet is
an iconic American Classic…a true “Blue Chip” automotive Collectible.
VIN DECODING
…the
B55F171944
VIN# decodes as follows (according to the best internet resources we could
find):
B
= 210 Series (6-Cylinder)
55
= 1955 Model Year
F
= Flint, Michigan Assembly Plant
171944
= Production Serial/Sequence
ODOMETER NOTE…
the exact and correct
mileage from the time this car was new in 1955 is not known with certainty due
to the mechanical limitations of the original odometer’s design, and its
replacement with a digital readout as part of the Dakota Digital Dash.  The speedometer cable needs repair/reconnection.
Therefore, the indicated mileage of 000515 at the time of listing does not
represent the actual mileage.
PAYMENT TERMS &
INVITATION…
a $500 non-refundable deposit via PayPal is required to hold the car for
5 business days, during which time the Bill of Sale must first be fully
executed, and the balance paid/cleared in full via bank to bank wire transfer
by the due date specified on the Bill of Sale. Serious buyers are invited to
examine the car personally by appointment
before
making a purchase
decision, but we are limiting appointments to those who
fully
intend
to buy the car, and are coming only to confirm what we have described and are
showing in the 175+ images.
ABOUT ME…
I am an avid Classic
Car enthusiast.  After retiring from 30 years of Sales & Marketing in
a Global 100 company, I began buying and selling Classic Cars and Collectibles
as a collector and for friends and clients.  This classic belongs to the
wife of a fellow classic car collector who passed eight years ago.
IMPORTANT DOCUMENT
& CONDITION OF SALE REMARKS…
Bill of Sale, and Georgia Registration will
be provided to the Buyer.
The state of Georgia
does not require titles for vehicles built before 1986.  Therefore, this 1955 Chevrolet Delray was not
issued a title.  The Registration
document is the legal document of ownership. Every state observes the DMV rules
of all other states, therefore this vehicle may be insured, licensed,
registered and driven in any state.
Whether it is titled depends upon the DMV Title rules of your state.
This Vehicle is sold
strictly on a final and “as-is” basis without any warranties expressed or
implied. Even the very best restored classics will require additional
maintenance and service – often without warning.  Therefore, please expect
to continue –
as the new owner and
caretaker of this classic
– to perform additional maintenance and
repairs.  We hope that you are able to enjoy the Delray without the need
for an immediate repair – but understand that this indeed could be found
necessary.  As seasoned collectors know, every time you
start
(or attempt
to start)
a collectible/classic vehicle is a new experience…it could be a
wonderful ride, or a new repair to undertake.  That is the nature of the
hobby, and this classic should not be purchased if you are not prepared for
this reality. We have presented the car accurately to the best of our ability,
but oversights are possible…so we invite pre-purchase inspection…
for serious
buyers only.
All sales are final.
Because this car is
only lightly driven locally – and is untested for long trips – we recommend
that it be transported to its new locale.
We remind you to be
sure to review all the images and ALL the captions for this classic – in
addition to this description – because they relate important information too!
